Spinning Sonic Landscapes
DJ Spooky, a Washington, DC-born electronic and experimental hip-hop musician whose work is sometimes classified as “illbient” or trip-hop, is as much a philosopher of the implications of rhythm as he is a DJ who keeps the party moving with infectious beats and mixes. In one breath, he’ll locate rhythm in the tempo of information and the way we move through our days; next, he locates rhythm in the expression of our internal conditions and the externalization of mind; and, finally, he finds rhythm in the sonic landscape, the chaos of 42nd Street. Contradictions? Not at all. All of these, in the end, are mere reflections of the essential rhythm of the heart.
